Introduction
2 Samuel 13 presents a sobering narrative of two destructive passions—infatuation and bitterness—and the tragic consequences that follow when these passions are left unchecked. Through the lives of Amnon and Absalom, Scripture exposes how misplaced desires and unresolved offenses can derail destinies.
PASSION ONE: AMNON — THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF INFATUATION
1. Mistaking Infatuation for Love
Amnon was described as having “fallen in love” with his very beautiful sister Tamar. His attraction was rooted in her beauty, not her person. This was not love—it was infatuation.
Infatuation:
An intense but short‑lived passion or admiration for someone or something.
Infatuation can be emotionally draining, obsessive, and even physically debilitating. Amnon nurtured this passion and disguised it as “love,” allowing it to grow into a monster.
“A man without self‑control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” — Proverbs 25:28
2. The Influence of a Cunning Associate
Jonadab, Amnon’s friend, provided the wicked strategy that enabled Amnon’s sin.
- Proverbs 12:26 — The righteous choose friends carefully.
- 1 Corinthians 15:33 — Bad company corrupts good character.
- Proverbs 13:20 — Walk with the wise and become wise.
Wrong counsel fertilizes wrong passions.
3. A Life Without Purpose
Amnon woke each day with no meaningful pursuit except to obsess over Tamar. Idleness often becomes a breeding ground for sin.
4. A Love Full of Pretense
His actions revealed that his “love” was selfish. He sought pleasure, not Tamar’s wellbeing.
“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.” — Romans 12:9
5. Misuse of Authority and Power
As a prince, Amnon used his position, the king’s trust, and the servants under him to execute his sinful desires.
“Woe to those who plan iniquity… because it is in their power to do it.” — Micah 2:1
6. Consumed by Lust
Tamar pleaded with him, but lust had already blinded his reasoning.
- Leviticus 18:9 — God forbids such relations.
- Romans 1:24–27 — When people reject God’s ways, He gives them over to their passions.
7. Rejecting the Godly Way
Tamar suggested a lawful approach—“Speak to the king…”—but Amnon refused. Seeking counsel often reveals the right path, but passion rejects wisdom.
8. Objectifying Desire
Once he satisfied his lust, Amnon hated Tamar more than he had “loved” her.
Why? Because she exposed his wickedness, foolishness, and moral failure.
9. The Endgame of Infatuation
“The man who commits adultery destroys himself.” — Proverbs 6:32
Amnon’s passion led to shame, hatred, and ultimately death.
PASSION TWO: ABSALOM — THE DEADLY ROOT OF BITTERNESS
1. The Danger of Tolerating Wrongdoing
David was furious about Amnon’s sin but took no action. His pattern of failing to correct his children is noted again in:
- 1 Kings 1:5–6 — David never rebuked Adonijah.
Unaddressed sin becomes fertile soil for bitterness.
2. Silence Is Not Forgiveness
Absalom refused to speak to Amnon—neither good nor bad.
This silence was not peace; it was resentment.
“If your brother sins against you, go and reprove him…” — Matthew 18:15
3. Bitterness Left Untreated Becomes Hatred
Absalom nurtured his bitterness for two years, allowing it to mature into a deadly plot.
“Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions.” — Proverbs 10:12
4. A Calculated Plot
Absalom orchestrated Amnon’s death with precision, using all available resources—just as Amnon had done in his sin.
Both passions—lust and bitterness—used power to destroy.
5. Choosing Passion Over God’s Warning
Like Cain, Absalom ignored God’s way of escape.
“If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?” — Genesis 4:7
Instead, he nurtured hatred until it produced murder.
6. The Endgame of Bitterness
Bitterness cost Absalom his destiny.
Just as Amnon lost his inheritance through lust, Absalom lost his through hatred.
SPIRITUAL INSIGHT: THE DEMONIC STRATEGY BEHIND WRONG PASSIONS
Wrong passions often serve as doorways for curses or destructive cycles.
- 2 Samuel 12:10–12 — Judgment was pronounced over David’s house.
- Wrong passions provided the actions that activated those consequences.
Whenever destructive passions are acted upon, the cry of the afflicted reaches God:
- Genesis 4:10 — Abel’s blood cried out.
- Psalm 9:12 — God does not ignore the cry of the humble.
CONCLUSION
The stories of Amnon and Absalom warn us that:
- Infatuation destroys destiny.
- Bitterness destroys inheritance.
- Both passions grow when left unchecked.
But God always provides a way of escape.
The call is to choose righteousness, seek counsel, confront wrongdoing in love, and guard our hearts from passions that lead to destruction.
